Checklist

There has been some recent discussion about the function of a checklist for a river trip. Just for the record, here is the checklist we are using for this project


Verde River Guide Field Work Checklist

Day Before:

Charge cell phone & digital camera batteries
Check battery levels in digital voice recorder & GPS
Check to see if snacks and on-river food is available. If not, go buy some.
Clean camera card
Send test message to Twitter.
Check fuel in vehicle--add as necessary

Load canoe.
Secure all four straps (3 9-footers and one 12 footer)

3 paddles
2 lifejackets
2 helmets
one dry bag
one milk crate
bailer
first aid box
gallon of water
drinking water bottle
waterproof box
all available cam buckle straps


Two bow saws
One lopper
One hand clipper
Survey flagging
bag for all of above
folding shovel

Laser Thermometer

Personal gear:

wool socks
river shoes
poly top and bottom
Shade hat
wristwatch
wallet with ID & one debit card only
cell phone (fully charged)
spare pair of eyeglasses


Dry bag contents

Zip lock for food
Gore-Tex jacket
Wool sweater
Extra socks
Extra poly top
Poly vest
toilet paper
2 Warm hats & 2 pr. gloves

Morning of trip:

File flight plan noting river stretch, acess points, ETA's, flows, temperatures, etc.
Prep & pack food
Double check list
Check canoe straps for tightness.
Double check this list

In highway transit

Make mileage notes.

At river access
Don't forget the put-in photo
Measure water temperature
Mark with survey flagging if appropriate.
Begin Twitter
Review safety procedures
Review paddle strokes
Do stretching exercises
Practice together in water

In river transit

Double check GPS waypoint number.
Make sure waypoint numbers match digital voice notes.
COntinue Twitter
Don't forget the photos.

At river take out

Double check the beach
Double check the parking area
Double check the canoe straps
Review paddling partner's checklist.

At home after trip
DOn't forget the take-out photo.
Hang all wet gear to dry
remove all food items from rigging
Account for all electronic items
reunite ID & debit card with normal wallet.

Data processing between trips:

Process brief note as to trip completion
Prepare draft trip narrative for blog
Process and post photos via Picasa to blog
Write photo captions
Process GPS data files
Download digital voice files
Upload "gpx" file to Google Maps
Convert GPS files to GIS shapefiles
Upload above files into public sector of Google Docs
Write descriptions for various waypoints on Google Map
Post Map to blog
